Around the world, labour movements are facing the challenges of authoritarianism and resisting in various ways. In many authoritarian countries, labour activists are imprisoned or forced into exile, trade union rights are severely violated, and the very survival of democratic union organizations is under serious threat.
In this webinar, we will focus on cases of Belarus, Myanmar, and Hong Kong, featuring three exiled labour activists who will share firsthand accounts of how labour movements in these regions are responding to the oppression of authoritarian regimes. They will also discuss how workers resist under various forms of political control.
Additionally, we will invite scholars and representatives from global labour organizations to explore the role of “international solidarity” in supporting workers’ rights under threat in authoritarian states.
